April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

20 Years of SAAM

April 2021 marks the official 20th anniversary of Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). This April we are highlighting the importance of engaging men as allies in the movement to end sexual violence.

“Even before SAAM became official, it was about both awareness and prevention of sexual assault, harassment, and abuse. Looking at the history of the movement to end sexual violence, it’s clear why: It’s impossible to prevent an issue no one knows about, and it’s difficult to make people aware of a problem without providing a solution. The two work in tandem, and they always have. From the civil rights movement to the founding of the first rape crisis centers to national legislation and beyond, the roots of SAAM run deep.”¹ (History of SAAM)

It’s Time to Step In Indiana

We all can use our voices to change damaging social norms perpetuating rape culture and sexual violence. An important step is becoming an effective bystander. Simply put, bystander intervention recognizes potentially harmful situations and responds in a way that can change the potential outcome. ICESAHT created the Step In program with that goal in mind; empowering all Hoosiers to use their voice and change a culture that normalizes sexual violence. The only person responsible for preventing sexual violence is the perpetrator, but we all can play an important role in protecting each other and keeping our communities safe.
